The Accra High Court has scheduled November 4, 2026, to deliver its official ruling on the bail application filed by Bernard Antwi Boasiako, commonly known as Chairman Wontumi. The former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman is seeking temporary release from Nsawam prison custody while he appeals a 20-year prison sentence.

The legal battle surrounding former NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, is approaching a critical juncture. The Accra High Court has officially slated November 4, 2026, as the date it will deliver a ruling on his application for bail pending appeal. Boasiako is currently seeking a temporary release from Nsawam prison custody as his legal team challenges his conviction.
The bail application stems directly from Wontumi's recent conviction, which resulted in a 20-year prison sentence. In an effort to overturn the conviction and the accompanying sentence, his legal counsel filed a formal appeal at the Court of Appeal on July 28, 2026. Subsequently, they filed the bail application in August. During the legal arguments, his defense maintained that granting bail is necessary to allow Boasiako to properly consult and confer with his lawyers in preparation for the complex appeal process.
The State, however, has firmly pushed back against the request. The Attorney-General strongly opposed the bail application in court, officially arguing that Boasiako represents a significant flight risk if released. The highly anticipated ruling on November 4 will ultimately determine whether the former regional chairman will be allowed to navigate the appellate process from home, or if he will remain behind bars while his appeal is heard.
