A 52-year-old South African man has been apprehended at Johannesburg's OR Tambo International Airport after authorities discovered a significant quantity of suspected heroin concealed in his luggage. The suspect was intercepted during an intelligence-led operation early on Sunday, September 20, 2026, immediately following his arrival on a flight from Accra, Ghana.
A thorough search of the passenger's luggage conducted by the South African Police Service uncovered multiple bullet-shaped packages and compressed blocks containing substances believed to be heroin. Official estimates place the street value of the intercepted narcotics at more than R2 million.
According to Police Spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Amanda van Wyk, the arrest highlights a concerning pattern of cross-border trafficking, marking the third suspected drug mule intercepted at the major international airport within a three-week window.
The suspect is scheduled to appear before the Kempton Park Magistrate's Court to face formal charges of dealing in illicit drugs and narcotics trafficking as investigations continue into potential local and international accomplices.
The arrest follows closely behind the major domestic seizure of 192 wraps of cocaine by police in Wa, Ghana, reinforcing heightened scrutiny over West African transit corridors utilized by regional and international drug syndicates.
