The Teacher Unions of Ghana have accused government of failing to fulfil its agreement on the automatic placement of teachers promoted in 2025 and the payment of their outstanding arrears.

In an urgent notice dated Tuesday, September 22, 2026, the unions said the 2025 promotion placement, together with the payment of arrears, had not been fully effected despite an agreement with government to automatically place all affected teachers by the close of September 2026.
The notice was signed by Thomas T. Musah, General Secretary of GNAT; Jacob Anaba, President of NAGRAT; and King Ali Awudu, President of PRETAG.
The unions referred to the situation as “disturbing and disappointing,” revealing that it had ignited further tension and anger among teachers across the country.
According to the unions, the failure to resolve the promotion placement and arrears is occurring alongside other outstanding issues confronting teachers.
These include the renewal of the Collective Agreement and the payment of Deprived Area Allowance, among others.
The unions highlighted that if all the outstanding issues are not resolved by midday on Thursday, September 24, 2026, they will no longer be able to restrain teachers from taking further action.
*“Whatever happens, the duty bearers should take full responsibility. This is not a threat but a promise.”*
The Teacher Unions have urged all teachers to remain calm and follow official directives from their leadership.
The union leaders also encouraged teachers to participate in all actions announced by their respective leadership.
The unions represent the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and the Pre-Tertiary Teachers Association of Ghana (PRETAG).
